ARTIST BIO

Victoria May is a dance artist, choreographer and teacher and has danced professionally in Canada and Europe for 27 years and has been based in Montreal, QC since 2007. Born and raised in Ottawa, ON with Métis family and community in Prince Albert, SK. 
She received her pre-professional dance training at the School of Dance in Ottawa and graduated with distinction from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Professional Division in 1994. She danced for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and went on to dance in Europe, primarily Scandinavia for 12 years with Goteborgs Danse Kompagni, (Sweden), Danish Dance Theatre (Denmark), Living Creatures/Camilla Stage (DK), Flying Pig Productions(DK) and worked as a freelance dancer since 2007 in Montreal and has worked with Louise Bédard Danse, Système D/Dominique Porte, Thea Patterson and Peter Trosztmer, Danse-Cite among others. 
She has taught at renown institutions such The Royal Danish Ballet School (DK), The Royal Danish Opera Academy (DK), Danish Dance Theatre (DK), Dansens Hus (DK), Ballet Divertimento (QC), Quinte Ballet School of Canada, Belleville (ON), Skånes Dance Theatre (SE), Oure College of Sports (DK). In addition Victoria is a certified comprehensive Pilates instructor. 
Victoria’s has received numerous grants and awards: Canada Council for the Arts- Creation and research grant, Dancers Transition Resource Centre Career Exploration Grant, Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Quebec- Production grant, Canada Council for the Arts- Commissioning of Canadian Compositions, Danish Arts Council- Danish International Visiting Artists Program, Canada Council for the Arts-Production grant, Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Quebec - Professional development grant, Toyota Foundation (DK), Augustinius Foundation (DK), Danish Actors Unions Blankbåndsmidlerne Scholarship (DK), Augustinius Foundation (DK), Arnold Spohr Award (Winnipeg, MB), Arnold Spohr Award (Winnipeg, MB), Duke and Duchess of York Award (Ottawa, ON), Young Performers Bursary Scholarship Fund (Ottawa, ON). 
Victoria’s choreographic work has been shown in Montreal, Place des Arts’s Cinquieme Salle: “Or” (2015), “This is Nothing New” (2016), “Absorbed in Silence” (2017) for 6 dancers, “8 wishbones” (2018). In addition she has presented work at Dansescenen in Denmark, choreographed for the Royal Danish Opera Academy and collaborated on a multi-disciplinary performance “Sposin” (2010). Her newest work “Kiwaapamitinaawaaw- I see you all” is about intergenerational connections on the matriarchal Métis line of her family. 
She has received numerous residencies in conjunction with her choreographic work such as at The Darling Foundry, Compagnie Marie Chouinard, CCOV center for creation, Zeugma Collectif de Folklore Urbain, Danse a la Carte residency program, Choreographic Centre- Ballet Divertimento, Studio Bizz, The Segal Centre for the Arts, Dansens Hus (DK). 
She is a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation- which is a member of the Métis National council and currently she is working toward a degree majoring in Intermedia in the Studio Arts department at Concordia University in Montreal, QC.
